Before the Vitruvian Triad
In architecture school and many other disciplines we are taught the Vitruvian triad: Firmitas, Utilitas, Venustas. A 3 part formula for perfection in creation (by human hands). The Vitruvian triad is the foundation of architecture theory found in the earliest documents on building. However today, it remains theory. Perhaps we have forgotten what came before.
We know; but we don't really know how to achieve perfection in creation. Working with paper to create spaces, I perceived the Vitruvian triad to be an effect rather than a catalyst for design. So I asked new questions:
- What do I use?
- How do I make?
- What do I see?
The answers, they came.
What do I use? -Medium
How do I make? -Method
What do I see? -Matter
Medium, Method, Matter. A triad for creation.
