Walking The Streets/ a short story

Our compassion is what makes us not spoiled, not indifferent and not poor in moral.

——

Yesterday I walked the streets of Cairo simply wanting to exercise and see the Cairo scene from a different perspective.

The contrast between the brightness and the saturation of the life I am used to and the vignette and the shadows of the life I saw on the streets was shocking.

Because I was filming, people where looking at me in a way I couldn’t quite interpret- some would say inquisitive, others would say hostile. They were definitely eyeing the iPhone 6s.

I was standing on the same rock arrangement as them, only a few pavement tiles away. But it felt like us and them were looking at one another through glas. An invisible barrier that both sides knew existed but neither could grasp. Only a few meters away was I from them, that was the reality; except it wasn’t. The reality was that we couldn’t be further apart.

But I walked the streets.

A much deeper comprehension and a flow of compassion washed over me. No textbook or novel could ever evoke what these people’s expressions have. Hundreds of little hints that unfold truths untouched about society and land... .

Although we learn about their poverty and misery, despite studying their situation and coming up with creative solutions in class, understanding- no feeling- how these people live is out of our reach.

So reach out to compassion.

Our compassion is what makes us not spoiled, not indifferent and not poor in moral.

Walk the streets.

The humility you will experience is an urgent wake up call. A redirection to appreciate what is most important in life.

Going off the usual track will give you a finer tune of life.

Will you walk the streets?

We are all a bunch of people doomed to lift each other up.
